Sci-Fi Trashes LeGuin’s Earthsea December 15, 2004
Posted by Ben in : Sci-Fi , trackbackI am utterly disgusted to the point of being speechless over director Rob Lieberman’s treatment of Ursula K. LeGuin’s Earthsea stories.
I had hoped to write a simple review here detailing all that I feel is wrong with it, but my emotions are running too high, so the review would be disjointed. All I can say is that Lieberman has completely trashed a world that Ms. LeGuin carefully crafted—all seemingly in an effort to make the story more of a “stock” fantasy story, of which Ms. LeGuin’s world is not.
Perhaps after I’ve had time to think about this and to watch the mini-series again will my emotions settle down enough to write a detailed review, highlighting all the changes and gross additions to the storyline.
Until then, Ms. LeGuin herself has a short statement regarding her input, or lack thereof, in the making of the film. This statement was made before Sci-Fi aired them this week. I would be interested in hearing more thoughts from her and whether or not she watched the mini-series.
